I'm a doctor's son, so I hear all sorts of stories about people passing out when they are injected with this, that, or the other. However, I always sort of assumed that I had better control over my body than all of them. Now, don't get me wrong, I hate getting shots. If hornets/wasps are at the top of my list of fears, needles are certainly next. However, I've had my share of immunizations and I've never been too affected by them. When the needle is gone, so is the pain. Even getting my blood drawn was about the same.
Additionally, I had part of my toenail taken off of my big toe on the left foot around two years ago. I recall that the numbing process wasn't fun, but it was certainly bearable. So, I went in yesterday to have the same procedure on my right foot. I guess my body wanted to have symmetrical toenails or something, so it made sure my right big toenail became ingrown. I went in with the expectation of the same experience. When the podiatrist went to numb me, I was only mildly nervous. However, unlike the last doctor who slowly inserted the needle and squirted the numbing fluid in at a snail's pace, this woman seemed to want to get the stuff inside me at an Indy 500 pit-stop speed. She jabs the needle in three different places, shoving the medication in like epinephrine. It was incredibly painful, and I was quite glad when she was finished. She said she'd leave the toe time to numb up, and left the room to grab the other tools needed.
Within seconds, my skin goes greener than the Mountain Dew shirt I was wearing that day. The room starts spinning, and I can't decide whether I'm going to pass out or throw up first. The nurse happened to come in and see how sick I looked and grabbed an ice pack to stick on my forehead. After some deep breaths, my nausea started to wane, and the room became clear again. The procedure itself went fine. Even as I type up this blog, I'm soaking the toe in Epsom-salted water. Other than occasionally itching, the toe has been good so far.
I take two things away from this experience. First, I better get the clearance that I'm allowed to swim and take part in the Ping Pong Tournament on our family's cruise in three weeks. Two, I will never again consider myself stronger or tougher than those people who get ill when they receive a shot. As an old friend always used to tell me, I "appreciate" their pain.
